Hakata Dontaku Festival Route — Japan's Biggest Spring Festival

The Hakata Dontaku Minato Matsuri, held every May 3–4, draws 2 million people to Fukuoka's streets — one of the largest attendance figures for any festival in Japan. The parade involves 30,000 performers representing every neighborhood, professional guild, and cultural organization in the city. The festival's name comes from the Dutch 'zondag' (Sunday holiday), entering the local vocabulary during the trading period when Dutch ships anchored in Hakata Bay.

**Best viewing positions:** The Meiji-dori intersection at Watanabe-dori is the widest point of the parade route — view from the elevated walkway above the Tenjin underground street for a stage-like overhead view. This position is known to almost no foreign visitors. **Night events:** The official parade ends at 21:00 but neighborhood matsuri performances continue at scattered venues until midnight. The Nakasu district hosts impromptu performances in the streets that aren't on any programme — simply walking the area between 21:00 and 23:00 encounters them.
