草津温泉是日本最负盛名的温泉胜地,以「汤畑」(意为「热水之田」)闻名——一套冒着蒸气的木造导水系统,每分钟流过3.2万公升55至65°C的矿物泉水,从火山源头逐渐降温至可泡汤的温度。汤畑座落于市中心,日夜蒸腾着硫磺白烟,周围环绕传统旅馆、纪念品店与公共浴场。泉水呈强酸性(pH值2.0至2.1),具有强大的抗菌效果与独特的硫磺气味。
草津的温泉文化可追溯至12世纪,小镇保留了温泉街的风貌——木造建筑、石板小径,以及「汤揉」表演仪式,表演者用长木桨搅拌浴池热水降温,一边吟唱传统歌谣。这座小镇座落于上州群山海拔1200公尺处,是全年皆宜的度假胜地——夏季健行、秋季赏枫、冬季滑雪、春季新生。
