Mt. Oiwa is described in local record as the oldest sacred mountain in the old province of Hitachi, and the shrine at its foot has kept the syncretic Shinto-Buddhist character that most Japanese shrines lost by government order in the 1870s — Buddhist statuary and Shinto halls still stand on the same grounds. Twenty-six deities are enshrined in the main hall, and by the shrine's own reckoning 188 across the mountain as a whole, which is an unusually large number for a single site.

The approach passes a three-trunked cedar of considerable age and a two-storey gate, and the main precinct takes ten or twenty minutes. Beyond it a trail climbs the mountain to a rock outcrop at the summit. It has acquired a reputation in Japan as a power spot and gets busy on weekend mornings, but foreign visitors are close to nonexistent, and the forest here is genuinely old.

Irishiken-cho, Hitachi. By car from JR Hitachi Station, roughly 10 km from Hitachi-Chuo IC, or by bus to the Oiwa Jinja-mae stop. Free to visit, with free parking on site — the first lot is immediately on the right past the entrance and has toilets. It fills early on busy mornings.

**Arrive before nine.** The car park is not large and on weekend mornings it fills quickly. Early also means the cedar grove still holds mist, which is when the approach looks like the reason people come. **Precinct and mountain are two different visits.** The shrine buildings, the gate and the three-trunked cedar take fifteen to twenty minutes on level ground. Climbing to the summit rock is a proper hour-plus walk on a mountain trail and needs shoes to match. **Look for the Buddhist survivals.** Statues and Buddhist elements standing alongside the Shinto halls are what makes this site unusual — the separation edict of 1868 stripped almost all of that elsewhere. It is easy to walk past without noticing what you are looking at. **Combine with the Hitachi coast.** Hitachi Station's glass concourse over the Pacific and the coastal road north toward Kitaibaraki make the natural other half of a day here.
