In the mountain river valleys of Asakura, the Amago River has carved a narrow gorge where the water drops through a series of pools connected by short cascades. The largest drop (Amago-no-taki) is 20 meters and falls directly into a turquoise-green pool enclosed by lichen-covered walls of granite. The gorge is a short walk from the trailhead — accessible but not trivial, requiring two log-bridge crossings and one section of fixed-rope descent.

Amago Valley, Asakura City. A drive from Fukuoka City. No public transport to trailhead. Parking (free, 20 cars) at Amago-dani Forest Recreation Ground. Trail is well-maintained; suitable for confident walkers.

**Swimming pools:** The three pools above the main falls are swimmable July–August (water temperature ~18°C). Locals come on weekday afternoons — the lower pool is crowded on summer weekends but the upper pools require 20 extra minutes of scrambling and are almost always empty. **Autumn foliage:** Mid-November, the walls of the gorge turn a mosaic of red and yellow. Timed with the 10:00–14:00 direct sunlight window into the gorge, the colors achieve maximum saturation. The combination of gold maple over turquoise water is exceptional.
