The Arita Ceramic Fair, held every year from April 29 to May 5 (Golden Week), is the largest porcelain sale event in Japan — 600+ stores along 4km of the main road through Arita town selling everything from antique Imari ware at collector prices to modern studio pieces and everyday tableware at significant discount. The event draws 500,000+ visitors over 7 days and is genuine bargain hunting alongside serious collecting.

**Antique section strategy:** Antique dealers concentrate in the area behind the main street (ask for 'furumono ichi'). Competition-grade pieces (17th–18th century Arita export ware) are priced correctly but not discounted. Minor cracked or restored pieces in this section represent the best value — the repair tradition of kintsugi (gold repair) is itself considered valuable. **Best day:** April 30 (day 2) after morning restocking — dealers restock overnight. Arriving at 8:30am before the main crowds gives first access to restocked items.
