別府的「地獄」是七座壯觀的地熱溫泉，溫度過高、化學成分過於極端而無法泡湯——純粹供人觀賞。每座地獄都呈現不同的自然奇觀：海地獄因礦物質溶解而呈鈷藍色，血池地獄因氧化鐵而呈鮮紅色，龍卷地獄每30分鐘噴發一次高達20公尺的沸水。水溫介於95°C至99.5°C之間。
別府座落於全球第二大地熱帶（僅次於黃石公園）之上，擁有超過2800個活躍溫泉源，這些供人觀賞的地獄僅僅是地底熱力活動的一小部分展現。
