越後湯澤是啟發川端康成諾貝爾文學獎小說《雪國》(1948年)的溫泉小鎮——開篇名句「穿過縣界長長的隧道,便是雪國」,描寫的正是列車駛出清水隧道、抵達湯澤深雪盆地的那一瞬間。這座城鎮年均降雪量達13公尺,是日本有人居住地區中降雪量最大的地方之一,也是主要的滑雪度假勝地。
溫泉水(鹼性硫酸鹽泉)遍布全鎮,供應18座公共浴場與眾多飯店的露天風呂。許多旅館提供「湯處」——可依小時預約的私人溫泉房,讓非住宿旅客也能體驗懷石料理配私人浴池(¥5,000–8,000)。深厚粉雪、天然溫泉與文學底蘊的結合,讓湯澤在日本滑雪小鎮中獨樹一格。

公休: 溫泉全年開放。滑雪場僅12月至4月營運。
