祇園是京都最著名的藝妓花街（「花街」），傳統木造町家沿著窄巷林立，紙燈籠將夜色點亮。花街以花見小路為中心，一間間高級茶屋在此招待藝妓與舞妓（見習藝妓），為企業客戶與富裕主顧舉辦私人晚宴。
祇園保存了京都的傳統演藝文化——藝妓表演經數百年淬鍊的舞蹈、樂曲（三味線、笛）與談話藝術。黃昏時分（18:00–20:00）氣氛最濃，藝妓盛裝往返於約會之間：雪白妝容、華麗和服、傳統木屐。

辨識真正的藝妓： 黃昏（17:30–19:30）是藝妓前往晚間約會的高峰時段，花見小路與白川一帶最容易遇見。真正的藝妓身穿低調而昂貴的和服（¥100萬–500萬）並帶家紋、白色足袋與獨特髮型。觀光客的變裝一望即知：布料較廉、妝容不正確、還會一群人拍照。
拍照禮儀： 遠距離拍攝藝妓尚可接受；擋路或要求自拍則被視為騷擾。藝妓是趕著上工的專業人士——請像對待任何盛裝赴職的人一樣尊重。京都已對在私人小巷騷擾藝妓的遊客開罰。
