長谷寺是一座山坡佛寺,以9.18公尺高的木造觀音(十一面慈悲女神)聞名——日本最大的木雕之一,貼滿金箔、供奉於觀音堂內。寺境沿山坡層層而上,多處觀景台可眺望鎌倉市景與相模灣。庭園四季變換:6月2500株繡球花盛開、11月楓葉轉紅、2月梅花綻放。
寺院的迷人之處來自神聖建築、自然之美與臨海的結合。鑿於山壁的洞窟神社(弁天窟)供奉弁財天(音樂與水之女神),四周環繞著上千尊小石雕。寺境還有錦鯉池、枯山水,以及供奉數百尊身穿紅圍兜小地藏的地藏堂——祈求孩童平安、悼念早逝孩童的供養。
