犬吠埼燈塔於1874年由英國工程師理查·亨利·布蘭頓建造,高31公尺,聳立於犬吠埼——關東地區最東端的岬角。這座白色磚造燈塔是日本僅有16座「可攀登燈塔」之一,99級螺旋階梯通往觀景台,可360度俯瞰太平洋。晴朗的日子,甚至能在地平線上看見地球的弧度。
銚子的地理位置讓它成為日本最早迎接日出的地點之一(與富士山的另一項宣稱相互競爭)。每年1月1日,數千人會在破曉前聚集於燈塔前,見證「初日出」——當年的第一道曙光,被視為極為吉祥的徵兆。太陽從海面躍升而出、化作橙紅色的光焰,攝影師每年都爭相追逐這一幕。
