Kokoen Garden — Nine Edo-Period Gardens

Kokoen Garden (好古園) is a collection of nine separate Edo-period style gardens built on the former site of samurai residences west of Himeji Castle. Opened in 1992, the gardens recreate historical landscaping using traditional techniques: koi ponds, tea houses, bamboo groves, pine arrangements, and seasonal flower plantings. Stone walls and corridors separate each garden, creating intimate spaces despite the 3.5-hectare total area.

The main Oyashiki-no-Niwa (御屋敷の庭, Lord's Garden) features a large pond with waterfall, stone bridges, and tea ceremony house (Souju-an, 双樹庵) serving matcha overlooking the water. The gardens are designed for strolling (池泉回遊式, chisen-kaiyu-shiki), with paths guiding visitors through different seasonal landscapes and perspectives.

**Post-castle timing:** Most visitors tour Himeji Castle first (2–3 hours), then Kokoen provides restful contrast — transition from stone fortifications to tranquil gardens. The gardens are less crowded than the castle (many tourists skip due to fatigue), creating peaceful atmosphere even during peak seasons. Budget 1 hour for contemplative stroll + tea house rest. **Tea house experience (Souju-an):** ¥500 buys a bowl of matcha and seasonal wagashi sweet served in the tea house overlooking the pond. This is informal table seating (not traditional tatami ceremony), making it accessible for beginners. The view across the pond with fall foliage or cherry blossoms reflected in water creates quintessential Japanese garden aesthetic. 20-minute rest here recharges after castle visit. **Seasonal strategy:** Cherry blossom season (early April) brings stunning pink canopy over ponds but intense crowds (combine with castle hanami chaos). Autumn (mid-November) offers maple foliage, cooler weather, and smaller crowds — ideal timing. Summer (June–August) is humid and green but features lotus flowers in ponds. Winter (January–February) is austere and quiet — minimalist beauty for garden purists.
