Myoken is the largest of the hot springs strung along the Amori river gorge north of Kirishima, in a group known as the Shinkawa Keikoku onsen villages and designated a national health resort area. The water was found in 1895 at the site of an old Myoken shrine. It is a calcium, sodium and magnesium bicarbonate spring, smooth on the skin, and the local name for it is the beauty water.

What distinguishes it is the setting and the format. The inns are strung along a wooded gorge rather than gathered into a street, several are built out over the river, and this was a toji place — somewhere people came for extended cures rather than a night. Several take day visitors. It is fifteen minutes from Kagoshima Airport, which makes it one of the easiest genuinely old-fashioned onsen areas in Japan to reach.

Shukukubota, Makizono-cho, Kirishima, along the Amori river. By taxi from Hayato Station, or by car from Mizobe-Kagoshima-Kuko IC. Several inns accept day visitors with their own hours and prices — Myoken Ishiharaso, for example, offers day bathing 11:30 AM – 3:00 PM with last reception at 1:30 PM at ¥1,800 for adults and ¥900 for children of elementary school age and under. Confirm with individual inns before travelling.

**Day bathing windows are short and vary by inn.** Several places take day visitors but typically only for a two- or three-hour window around midday, with early last reception. Ring the specific inn. **Several baths are on the river.** The riverside rotenburo built out over the Amori are what distinguish Myoken from the larger Kirishima Onsen resort up the mountain. **Fifteen minutes from the airport.** Which makes an onsen village of this character viable on an arrival or departure day — unusual in Japan. **It was a cure place.** Toji means long stays for treatment rather than overnight tourism, and some inns still have self-catering rooms and long-stay rates. That history is why the atmosphere is quiet. **The wider gorge has more.** Shinkawa Keikoku strings several small onsen along the same river; Myoken is the biggest but not the only one.
