NyudozakiOga peninsulalighthouse40th parallelishiyaki

The northern tip of the Oga peninsula, where a treeless grass headland runs out to low cliffs and stops. There are no trees because of the wind. The lighthouse is striped black and white — the pattern exists so it can be seen against snow — and it is one of only sixteen lighthouses in Japan that visitors are allowed to climb.

The 40th parallel crosses here and there is a line of monuments in Oga stone marking it, arranged so that the sun sets along them at the equinox. Behind the cape are a handful of shops and restaurants doing ishiyaki, the local method of cooking fish soup by dropping fire-heated stones into a wooden tub, which boils it violently at the table. The car park is large and free, the grass is walkable, and the sunset over the Sea of Japan is the reason people stay until it is dark.

The cape's isolation has shaped the small community that lives behind it, where the handful of restaurants doing ishiyaki often source their fish directly from local boats rather than wholesale markets, and many of the same families have run these businesses for multiple generations. Because the headland faces directly into the prevailing winds off the Sea of Japan, weather here changes quickly — clear skies can give way to sudden mist or squalls within an hour, and locals treat the cape's moods as part of its character rather than an inconvenience. The 40th parallel markers draw a specific kind of visitor interested in the coincidence of latitude and geography, and similar markers exist at other points around the globe along the same line, giving the cape a quiet claim to a global reference point most visitors never think to look for elsewhere. Beyond the lighthouse and the markers, the open grassland itself invites unhurried walking — paths wind along the cliff edge with views back toward the peninsula's volcanic hills, and the absence of trees means the sky dominates the scene in a way unusual for Japan's typically forested coastlines. Visitors who stay through sunset often find the walk back to the car park in near-darkness, guided only by the lighthouse beam sweeping across the headland, to be as memorable as the daylight views.

在地私房情報

**Climb the lighthouse.** ¥200, and only sixteen in Japan allow it. The black and white bands exist to make it visible against snow. **Eat ishiyaki.** Fire-heated stones dropped into a wooden tub of fish and broth, boiling it at the table. Several of the restaurants behind the cape do it and it is specific to Oga. **Find the 40th parallel markers.** A line of Oga stone monuments marks the latitude and is aligned so the equinox sun sets along it. **Sunset, and it is exposed.** The headland faces west over the Sea of Japan with nothing in the way. It is also windy enough that the grass is treeless — dress accordingly. **Combine with Kanpuzan.** The rotating observation tower on the volcanic dome is twenty minutes away and gives the aerial view of the peninsula.
