Ogata Village Polder Museum — location in 秋田縣, Ogata

秋田縣 · Ogata

40.0095°N, 139.9470°E

Lake Hachirogata was the second-largest lake in Japan. Between 1957 and 1977 it was drained — a national project using Dutch engineering to create seventeen thousand hectares of farmland and a new village, Ogata, settled by farmers recruited from across the country. It is the largest reclamation project in Japanese history and one of the strangest places in the country: a grid of enormous rice fields below sea level, laid out on the bed of a lake.

The museum covers the engineering, the politics and the settlers, and is unusually frank about what followed — the project was completed just as Japan moved to reduce rice production, and the new farmers spent decades in dispute with the government over what they were allowed to grow. Outside, Prefectural Route 298 runs eleven kilometres between cherry trees and rape flower, which in early May is one of the great drives in northern Japan.

**Early May for the avenue.** Eleven kilometres of cherry and rape flower along Route 298, and the museum is free to everyone during the festival period. **Read the aftermath, not just the engineering.** The project finished as Japan started paying farmers to grow less rice, and the settlers spent decades fighting about it. The museum does not hide this and it is the most interesting part. **You are below sea level.** The village floor is several metres below the surrounding sea. Standing in the fields with that in mind is the experience. **Dutch engineering.** The reclamation was designed with Dutch consultants and the drainage system reflects it. There is a monument to that connection in the village. **Combine with Kanpuzan.** The rotating tower on the Oga peninsula gives the aerial view of the whole polder.
