Sakura was a castle town of the Hotta clan, close enough to Edo that its domain school and its samurai mattered, and three of the retainers' houses survive on their original street: the Kawara house, of higher rank with a formal entrance, the Tajima house, of middling rank, and the Takei house. All three are late Edo and open, and seeing them side by side makes the rank distinctions legible in a way a single preserved house never does — the size of the entrance, the presence or absence of a formal reception room, the number of rooms.

Immediately west of the street is Hiyodorizaka, a sunken lane between bamboo, unchanged in form since the Edo period and used by the retainers walking to the castle. It is a hundred and sixty metres of green light and it is free. The two together take an hour and cost ¥210.

57 Miyakoji-machi, Sakura. About a short walk from Keisei-Sakura Station. Admission ¥210 general and ¥100 students; elementary and junior high school students free at weekends and on holidays. The Hiyodorizaka bamboo lane immediately west is free and open at all times.

**Compare the three, do not just visit one.** The whole value here is that houses of three different ranks stand together. Look at the entrances first — a formal genkan versus a plain one is the clearest signal of status in the whole street. **Hiyodorizaka is free and takes ten minutes.** The bamboo lane is immediately west of the houses, and it is the photograph most people come away with. There is no ticket. **Weekends are free for children.** Elementary and junior high school students do not pay on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. **Combine with Rekihaku.** The national history museum is in the castle park fifteen minutes away, and the two together make Sakura a full day. **It is thirty minutes from Narita Airport.** For anyone with a long layover or a first or last night near the airport, this is a considerably better use of the time than the airport hotel district.
