Sawara was a river port that got rich during the Edo period shipping rice and sake to Tokyo, and the merchant houses from that era still line both sides of the Ono River through the old town. Wooden machiya buildings with slatted facades, white-plastered warehouses (kura), willow trees trailing branches in the water, stone bridges arching over the canal — the district preserves over 200 buildings from the 1700s and 1800s, making it one of Chiba's most intact historical townscapes.

What makes it authentic is that these aren't museum replicas. They're working businesses: sake breweries that still brew in wooden vats, soy sauce shops fermenting in clay urns, inns renting rooms to guests. The buildings are old and show it — wood darkened by centuries, roof tiles misaligned, foundations settling toward the river. Small wooden boats pole past during the day, and if you walk the narrow lanes beside the canal at dawn or dusk when the crowds are gone, the place feels genuinely displaced in time. It's what Kyoto's Gion was before mass tourism turned it into a photo backdrop.

Train (recommended): JR Sobu Line from Tokyo Station to Chiba (~40 min), transfer to JR Narita Line to Sawara (~50 min). Total ~90 min, ¥1,520. Train express: JR Limited Express 'Shiosai' from Tokyo Station directly to Sawara (~80 min, ¥2,960 reserved seat). Less frequent but faster. Car: Via Ken-O Expressway to Higashi-Kanto Expressway (Sawara-Katori IC), then 5 min to historic district. Parking available at Sawara Station lot (¥300/hour) or Ono River parking area (¥500/day).

Weekday mornings 9:00–11:00 AM when the town is quiet and shopkeepers set up. Festival weekends (July and October) are vibrant but crowded. Avoid summer afternoons — the historic streets offer little shade.

Sawara remains largely unknown to international tourists. Even on weekends, crowds are modest compared to Kyoto or Nikko equivalents. The Grand Festival (July 13–16 and October 12–14) brings 100,000+ visitors and the streets become packed for float processions — book accommodation months ahead for festival weekends.

**Boat ride:** Small wooden boats (sappa-bune) run 30-minute cruises on the Ono River, departing every from 10:00-16:00 at the Ino Tadataka Museum dock (¥1,500). The narration is Japanese-only but the visuals are the point: passing under willow branches, ducking beneath 300-year-old stone bridges, gliding past machiya with wooden docks where merchants used to load rice onto boats. Early morning (10:00) and late afternoon (15:00) give you the best reflections on the water. Skip it if the river looks muddy after rain. **Ino Tadataka's house:** Sawara's most famous resident, Ino Tadataka (1745-1818), spent 17 years walking the entire coast of Japan to create the first accurate national map. His former residence is now a museum showing his surveying tools — wooden quadrants, measuring chains, star charts — and the massive hand-drawn maps he produced. His measurements were accurate to within 0.2%, using nothing but Edo-period instruments and patient triangulation. The precision is staggering. Entry ¥500, combined with the boat dock. **Sake brewery:** The result is earthy, funky sake with more complexity than modern styles. Tastings cost ¥500 for five small cups poured in their Edo-period kura warehouse. Their Gonin Musume junmai is the flagship bottle (¥2,500 for 720ml), sold only at the brewery and specialist Tokyo shops. The building itself is worth seeing: massive wooden beams, clay walls, dim lighting, the smell of fermenting rice. **Festival timing:** The Sawara Grand Festival runs twice yearly: July 14-16 (Yasaka Shrine) and October 12-14 (Suwa Shrine). Massive three-story wooden floats (dashi) get pulled through the narrow streets by teams of 50+ people, accompanied by flutes and drums. The floats carry mechanical ningyo dolls that move their heads and arms — Edo-period animatronics powered by hidden pulleys. Streets are packed; arrive early for viewing positions.
