住吉大社是日本最古老的神社之一（西元211年創建），早於佛教影響日本之前。神社的四座本殿展現「住吉造」——一種為此神社所獨有的古老建築樣式：直脊屋頂、不帶裝飾性的曲線，以未上漆的天然木材建成。這種樣式保存了佛教傳入前的神道美學。
神社供奉海之神祇，歷史上受船員與商人崇敬。標誌性的反橋（拱橋）橫跨水池，構成神社最常被拍攝的一景——一座陡峭的朱紅拱橋倒映水中。
