鶴之城是1868年會津藩進行最後抵抗的五重白色天守,官軍以阿姆斯特朗大砲從山丘上轟擊,他們仍堅守了一個月。這座城堡最獨特之處是紅色屋瓦——在日本城堡中絕無僅有,是2011年整修時依17世紀原貌復原的樣式。天守聳立於石垣與寬闊護城河之上,高39公尺,園區內逾千株櫻花於4月中旬盛開。
館內博物館分五層樓展示會津藩歷史,重點著墨於白虎隊的悲劇:20名少年武士見城中升起濃煙,誤以為城已淪陷,便在附近山丘上切腹自盡。僅一人生還。頂層觀景台環繞天守峰頂,可360度俯瞰會津若松市與遠方群山。紅瓦與白灰泥牆、黑色木樑形成強烈對比,冬季雪覆園區或春季櫻花將城堡染成粉色時,景致格外壯麗。
