Around sixty Buddhist figures are carved directly into the tuff cliffs of a small valley outside Usuki, cut between the late Heian and Kamakura periods by hands nobody has ever identified. There is no record of who commissioned them or why, which is unusual for work of this quality and scale.

They were designated National Treasures in 1995, the first cliff carvings in Japan to be given that status and the first sculpture in Kyushu. The central figure, the Dainichi Nyorai of the Furuzono group, is the one that appears on every poster: for centuries its head lay on the ground below the body after the neck failed, and it was reattached only in the 1990s restoration. Traces of the original pigment survive on several faces. The site is laid out as a walking circuit of four groups linked by paved paths and steps, under roofs that were added to stop further weathering.

Fukada 804-1, Usuki City. By car from Usuki Station; buses run from the station but infrequently. Admission ¥550 adults, ¥270 children. Free parking. The circuit is paved but includes steps and slopes between the four carving groups.

**The Dainichi Nyorai head was on the ground until the 1990s.** Photographs from before the restoration show it resting below the body, and locals had come to prefer it that way. The decision to reattach it was contested. Knowing that changes how the face reads. **Pigment survives if you look.** Red and black traces remain on several figures, most visible in raking light early and late rather than at midday. **Nobody knows who made them.** No inscription, no patron, no temple record. For sixty figures of National Treasure quality this is close to unique in Japan, and the local explanations are all legend. **Lotus ponds in front, July to August.** The paddies below the carvings are planted with lotus and flower through midsummer, which is the one time the approach is as photographed as the carvings. **Pair with the Nioza lanes in town.** Twenty minutes away, and the two together make a half day that needs no other planning.
