柳川是建在水上的城鎮——930條運河最初是環繞城池的防禦水道,後來則作為灌溉、運輸與防洪之用。城池在明治時代傾頹,運河卻留了下來,穿行於住宅巷弄之間、石橋底下、垂著紫藤與柳枝的庭園牆邊。航行其上的川舟(どんこ舟)是平底木船,由站立的船夫撐篙前進——這門手藝在同一批家族之間代代相傳。
一小時的遊船涵蓋南側運河網約3公里,穿過自1960年代以來幾乎沒有改變的街區。船夫會在特定的地點吟唱傳統的船歌。「慢」正是精髓所在——唯有這樣的速度,你才會留意到那些細節。
