東長寺由空海(弘法大師)於806年自唐朝返日後所創,是福岡最古老的真言宗寺院,也是日本最大木造佛像的所在——一尊1992年以檜木雕成、11公尺高的坐姿福岡大佛。近看其尺度令人震撼:光是臉部就有2.4公尺,以平安時代晚期的寫實風格雕成。
佛座之下是一條名為「地獄極樂巡禮」的通道——一條1.5公尺寬、貫穿佛座底部、伸手不見五指的隧道。參與者須靠觸摸尋找扶手,最後從另一端走向光明,象徵穿越死亡與重生。這份體驗,出乎意料地觸動人心。
