水分寺座落於筑後川平原之上221公尺的山頂,晴天時視野可從南方的阿蘇火山口一路延伸到北方的福岡天際線——120公里的視覺橫掃,讓人看清九州內陸究竟有多平坦、多遼闊。寺院本身據傳始於7世紀,樸實無華,圍著一方露天平台而立,彷彿懸浮在下方農田與上方天空之間。
上山的路蜿蜒穿過柿子園與檜木林,途中經過三座小攝社,如同故事裡的章節,為攀登點上段落。山頂一帶完全未經開發——沒有販賣機、沒有紀念品店、沒有任何多餘的設施。
