Asahiyama Zoo (旭山動物園) revolutionized zoo design in Japan by creating 'behavioral exhibits' that allow visitors to observe animals in natural behaviors rather than static cages. The penguin exhibit has an underwater tunnel where penguins 'fly' overhead. The polar bear exhibit includes a diving pool with acrylic viewing domes — visitors stand inside while bears swim around them. The seal exhibit has a vertical cylinder 'seal tower' where seals swim vertically, demonstrating their natural water-column navigation.
These innovations saved the zoo from closure in the 1990s and made it Japan's most-visited zoo despite being in rural Hokkaido. The philosophy: design exhibits around the question 'What is this animal's most interesting behavior?' rather than 'How do we display this animal?'
