Sea of clouds viewing: The unkai (sea of clouds) phenomenon occurs on clear autumn and winter mornings (September–March) when temperature inversions trap mist in valleys, creating the illusion of a castle floating in clouds. Optimal conditions: cold clear mornings after rain (70%+ previous-day humidity), minimal wind, and sunrise timing (6:30–9:00). The Unkai Observatory (700m from parking area) provides the best vantage point without entering the castle. Peak season is October–December when foliage adds color contrast.

Hiking preparation: The 700-meter path from 5th parking area to castle gate climbs 150 vertical meters via stone steps and dirt trail. Wear sturdy shoes (no sandals); trail can be slippery after rain. Walking sticks available at trailhead (free). The hike takes 20–30 minutes uphill, 15–20 minutes down. Fitness level: moderate (elderly visitors and children regularly complete it). For those unable to hike, a viewing platform at 5th parking area offers distant castle views.

Castle cat resident: Sanjuro (さんじゅーろー), a friendly tabby cat, serves as the castle's unofficial mascot and tourism ambassador. Sanjuro lives on-site, often napping in the castle's entryway or patrolling the stone walls. Photography with Sanjuro is popular, though he's a cat and may not cooperate. Castle staff feed him but visitors should not (signs posted). This feline presence adds charm to the historic setting and appears frequently on Takahashi tourism materials.
