Day Trip to Nara

**Optimal route:** Exit Kintetsu Nara Station → walk through Higashimuki shopping street → buy deer crackers at park entrance → feed deer in open lawn area (practice bowing) → Todaiji Temple (1 hour including Daibutsuden hall and grounds) → lunch in Naramachi historic district (traditional machiya houses converted to cafes ¥1,000–2,000) → Kasuga Taisha Shrine (45 minutes) → return through park for sunset deer photos → Kintetsu Nara Station departure by 17:00 (back to Osaka 18:00). **Deer interaction:** Buy crackers only when ready to feed — holding visible crackers triggers deer swarm. Break crackers into pieces to extend interaction and prevent single deer from monopolizing. Hold cracker at head-height; deer bow; reward with piece. Some deer are aggressive (usually males with antlers October–March) — if overwhelmed, raise hands to show 'no food' and deer disperse. Deer bite clothing and bags searching for hidden crackers — wear clothes you don't mind getting nibbled. Don't tease deer by withholding food after bowing — they remember and may headbutt. **Todaiji's Daibutsu:** The Great Buddha (大仏 Daibutsu, 751 CE) is 15 meters tall weighing 500 tons of bronze. The hall (Daibutsuden, 大仏殿) is world's largest wooden building despite being reconstruction 30% smaller than original. The Buddha's hand gesture (abhaya mudra) symbolizes fearlessness and protection.
