Kawagoe, a solo 30 minutos en tren de Tokio, conserva una calle de almacenes kurazukuri (construcciones de muros gruesos y techos de tejas negras, diseñados para resistir incendios) que transporta directamente al periodo Edo. La calle principal, flanqueada por estas impresionantes fachadas negras reconvertidas en tiendas, dulcerías y restaurantes, es una de las escenas urbanas más fotogénicas de la región de Kanto.

Kawagoe es también la capital japonesa del boniato (satsumaimo): helados, chips, tartas y dulces de boniato se encuentran en cada esquina. El callejón Kashiya Yokocho (callejón de las dulcerías) mantiene una docena de tiendas artesanales de golosinas tradicionales que parecen sacadas de la infancia de otra época.

Tren Tobu Tojo desde Ikebukuro (30 min, ¥480) o Seibu Shinjuku (1 h). La calle kurazukuri está a 15 min a pie de la estación. Acceso libre.

**Best timing for photography:** Arrive before 9:00am when shop shutters are still closed — the street is empty and morning light creates long shadows across the black walls. The iconic view is from the intersection of Kurazukuri Street and the Toki no Kane (bell tower) visible in the background. Weekday mornings offer complete solitude; weekends see significant crowds after 11:00. **Hidden side streets:** Most tourists walk only the main Kurazukuri corridor. Turn down Kashiya Yokocho (菓子屋横丁, Candy Alley) — a narrow lane lined with traditional sweet shops selling dagashi (penny candy), hand-pulled candy, and sweet potato chips. Try the purple sweet potato soft serve at Matcha-ya (¥400). **Museum-quality kura:** Osawa House Residence (大沢家住宅, ¥200 entry) is the oldest surviving kura (1792), open for interior viewing. The thick earthen walls (30cm), fireproof construction details, and merchant family artifacts show how these buildings functioned. English explanations available. The adjacent Kurazukuri Museum (¥100) provides architectural context — worth 20 minutes.
