The Kumamoto Contemporary Art Museum occupies a modernist building (designed by Kazuyo Sejima) in the heart of downtown, focusing on post-1960 art with an emphasis on Japanese contemporary artists and international video/installation work. The permanent collection includes major works by Yayoi Kusama, Yoshitomo Nara, and Lee Ufan. The museum's free admission policy (for permanent collection) makes it accessible for casual drop-ins during downtown shopping.
