Miidera Temple (三井寺, formally Onjo-ji) is a major Tendai Buddhist temple founded in 672 CE, located on Mt. Hiei's eastern slopes above Otsu. The temple's name derives from a sacred spring (Reisen, 霊泉) whose water was used to bathe three emperors at birth — 'mii' (三井) means 'three wells.' The temple complex has over 40 buildings spread across hillside terraces, including a National Treasure main hall (Kondo) from 1599.

Miidera is less touristy than Enryakuji but historically significant — it served as headquarters for the Tendai Jimon sect after splitting from Mt. Hiei's Enryakuji in the 11th century. The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times in conflicts between rival Buddhist factions. The observation deck provides panoramic views of Lake Biwa and Otsu city.

**Vs. Enryakuji comparison:** Miidera offers similar mountain temple atmosphere as Enryakuji but is more accessible, less crowded, and cheaper (¥600 vs ¥1,000). The trade-off: Enryakuji is grander in scale and historical importance; Miidera is more intimate and relaxed. If time is limited and you want mountain temple experience without Enryakuji's commitment, Miidera is excellent alternative. Serious Buddhist pilgrims should visit both. **Observation deck views:** The temple's hilltop observation platform provides 180-degree panorama of Lake Biwa, Otsu city, and distant mountains. Early morning (8:00–9:00) offers clearest visibility before haze builds. The view demonstrates Otsu's strategic position — the city sits at Lake Biwa's southern tip where the Tokaido highway (Kyoto–Edo road) passed, making it a critical transportation and military control point throughout Japanese history. **Sacred spring ritual:** Visitors can drink from the Reisen spring (霊泉) at the base of the complex — fill wooden ladles from stone basin and sip the water believed to grant longevity and purify the spirit. The ritual is free and encouraged. The water is naturally filtered through Mt. Hiei's rock layers and emerges cold and mineral-rich. Bring an empty bottle to fill (common practice; no one will judge).
