**Ferry choice:** Two ferry services operate to Miyajima — JR West Ferry (JR Pass valid, free with pass) and Matsudai Kisen Ferry (JR Pass not valid, ¥180). Both depart from Miyajimaguchi and take 10 minutes. JR Ferry's route passes closer to Itsukushima Shrine's torii gate, offering superior photo opportunities from the boat — sit on the right side (starboard) during outbound journey for torii views. Return ferry: sit on the left side. Matsudai Ferry is slightly faster but misses the torii approach. For photographers, JR Ferry is worth choosing even if paying separately. **Deer interaction etiquette:** Miyajima's deer population (~500 individuals) roams freely and is habituated to humans but remains wild. They will approach expecting food, especially paper items (maps, tickets) which they attempt to eat — keep such items in bags. Feeding deer is now discouraged to prevent health issues and aggressive behavior. The deer are generally docile but can nip or push during feeding frenzies. Photography is encouraged, but respect their space — approaching fawns may provoke protective does. Deer are most active mornings and evenings; midday they rest in shade. **Momiji manju tasting:** Momiji manju (もみじ饅頭, maple leaf-shaped cakes) are Miyajima's iconic sweet, invented in the Meiji era and now available in dozens of variations — traditional red bean paste (anko), custard cream, chocolate, matcha, cheese, and even deep-fried versions (age-momiji). Major producers like Yamaichi (山一) and Fujiya (藤い屋) have flagship stores near the shrine approach. Freshly baked manju (焼きたて) are superior to pre-packaged versions — seek shops with visible baking operations. Price: ¥120–150 each, ¥800–1,200 per box. Shelf life: 1 week.
