Nagahama Castle (長浜城) was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1576 when he was still a rising warlord under Oda Nobunaga. The current structure is a 1983 concrete reconstruction (the original was dismantled in 1615), but the castle serves as a history museum covering Hideyoshi's early career and Nagahama's development. The fifth-floor observation deck provides views of northern Lake Biwa and the surrounding mountains.

The castle sits in Nagahama Castle Historical Museum Park, a lakefront green space with walking paths, cherry trees (400+ trees blooming early April), and direct access to Lake Biwa's shoreline. The combination of castle, lake views, and parkland makes this a pleasant stop when visiting Nagahama's Kurokabe Square (15-min walk away).

**Museum content:** The five-floor museum focuses on Hideyoshi's Nagahama period (1576–1583) when he was still Hashiba Hideyoshi (before his surname change). Exhibits cover: his construction of Nagahama Castle and town, his rise from ashigaru (foot soldier) to daimyo, and his tea ceremony patronage. The displays are text-heavy with Japanese signage (limited English) — history enthusiasts will appreciate the detail, but casual visitors may find it dry. The observation deck is the highlight for most tourists. **Lakefront experience:** The park's shoreline provides intimate Lake Biwa access — wooden boardwalks extend over the water, and benches face the lake for contemplation. This is a local spot, not tourist destination — families feed ducks, couples stroll, elderly residents exercise. The atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried. Sunrise (6:00–7:00 summer) is magical here — mist rises off the lake, and fishing boats head out creating gentle wake patterns. **Combined itinerary:** Nagahama Castle pairs well with Kurokabe Square (15-min walk south) for a half-day Nagahama visit. Arrive Nagahama Station 10:00, walk to castle (20 min), visit museum and park (60–90 min), walk to Kurokabe Square (15 min), explore glass district and lunch (2–3 hours), return to station by 16:00. Total 5–6 hours. This itinerary works well as a day trip from Kyoto (80 min each way by JR) or Hikone (15 min by train).
