Nakagusuku is the best-preserved gusuku in Okinawa and the one that shows what the masonry could do. It was built up through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and completed by Gosamaru, a lord who moved here to watch Katsuren across the bay; six enclosures step along a ridge with the East China Sea on one side and the Pacific on the other, joined by curtain walls in three different stone-laying techniques — rough, rectangular and polygonal, all visible in one circuit.

Commodore Perry's expedition surveyed it in 1853 and the party's report on the quality of the stonework is still quoted locally. It survived 1945 better than any other gusuku. It is a World Heritage site as part of the Ryukyu gusuku group, open every day, and the views from the upper enclosures take in both coasts at once.

503 Ogusuku, Kitanakagusuku, Nakagami District. Car recommended — about 40–from Naha Airport, with free parking. Admission is charged — confirm the current rate on arrival. Part of the Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu World Heritage listing.

**Look at the three wall techniques.** Nozura-zumi rough stacking, nunozumi rectangular coursing and aikata-zumi polygonal fitting all appear here in one site, which is the reason masons and archaeologists rate Nakagusuku above the other gusuku. **Both seas from the top.** The ridge is narrow enough that the upper enclosures look out over the Pacific on one side and the East China Sea on the other. Clear mornings are best. **Perry's survey.** The 1853 American expedition recorded the stonework in detail and was impressed by it. The account is quoted on site and is a useful outside verdict. **Longer summer hours.** To 6:00 PM from May to September, which makes a late-afternoon visit viable in the hot months when the middle of the day is punishing. **Nakamura House is next door.** A few minutes away, and the two together give you the fortress and the farmhouse.
