Nakijin Castle (今帰仁城跡) is a gusuku (Ryukyuan castle/fortress) ruin atop a 100-meter hill commanding views over the East China Sea and northern Okinawa. Built around 1300 as the seat of the Hokuzan Kingdom (one of three kingdoms that predated unified Ryukyu), the castle's massive stone walls snake along ridgelines for 1.5km — among the longest castle walls in Okinawa.

The site is a UNESCO World Heritage component (one of nine Ryukyuan gusuku sites) and particularly famous for early-blooming cherry blossoms — Okinawa's cherry season (January–February, the earliest in Japan) sees the castle walls lined with pink blooms.

**Cherry blossom season:** Nakijin's cherry blossoms (Hikanzakura, 緋寒桜, deep pink variety) bloom mid-January to early February — Japan's earliest cherry season. The castle walls are lined with 400+ cherry trees creating pink corridors along the stone fortifications. The Nakijin Castle Cherry Blossom Festival (1/20–2/5 annually) features night illumination (18:00–21:00, ¥600 entry) when the lit blossoms glow against dark stone and ocean backdrop. Book accommodation 1+ month ahead for festival dates. **Gusuku architecture:** Okinawan gusuku castles differ from Japanese castles — no keeps (tenshukaku), emphasis on stone walls over buildings, integration with natural topography (hilltop sites), and coral limestone construction (not granite). Nakijin's walls use natural stone fitted without mortar (similar to Inca masonry), creating curves that follow the hilltop contours. The walls are the architecture — they define the space rather than merely protecting buildings inside. **View and sunset:** The main citadel area provides panoramic views over the East China Sea, Yagaji Island, and Kouri Island. The castle faces west, making sunset viewing spectacular (17:30–18:30 in winter, 19:00–19:30 in summer). The open-ocean horizon without obstructions creates dramatic sky colors. Combine castle visit with sunset timing — arrive 60–90 minutes before sunset to tour the site, then watch sunset from the upper ward.
