**Deer behavior guide:** Deer are most active and hungry early morning (7:00–9:00) and late afternoon (16:00–18:00). Midday they rest in shade. If you purchase crackers, deer will swarm aggressively — break crackers into pieces and distribute quickly, showing empty hands when finished to signal you have no more. Deer bow when requesting food; bowing back triggers them to bow again (amusing but delays feeding). Male deer grow antlers October–March; antlers are ritually cut in October's Shika-no-Tsunokiri ceremony to prevent injuries. **Feeding etiquette:** Deer can become pushy or nip clothing if they smell crackers. Keep crackers hidden until ready to feed, then commit fully — half-hearted feeding attracts more deer. After feeding, raise both hands to show they're empty; deer understand this gesture and move on. Do not feed human food (bread, chips) — it causes digestive issues. Shika-senbei are made from rice bran and wheat flour specifically formulated for deer nutrition. **Best photography locations:** Todaiji's Nandaimon Gate at sunrise (7:00–8:00) when deer gather on the approach path and morning light illuminates the gate. Wakakusayama hillside offers elevated views of deer grazing with Nara cityscape backdrop. Ukimido floating pavilion (south park) creates mirror reflections of deer drinking at pond's edge — arrive at golden hour (16:30–17:30) for best light.
