**Underground tour strategy:** Two routes are available — the standard Sohdayu-kouto tunnel shows Edo-period mining with animatronics, while the Doyu-no-Wareto observation path provides the dramatic gorge view. Do both — they're 400m apart and reveal different historical phases. The gorge is most photogenic 9:00–11:00 when morning sun illuminates the eastern cliff face. **Kitazawa Flotation Plant:** 2km north of the main mine, the massive 1938 ore processing facility stands abandoned on a hillside — a Gunkanjima-like industrial ruin with concrete chutes, flotation tanks, and rusted machinery visible through chain-link fencing. Not officially open but viewable from the road. Extraordinary photography location with zero English signage (ask locals for 'Kitazawa Sensui-jo'). **Gold panning experience:** The mine offers gold panning (¥1,000, 30 min) where participants sluice actual Sado river sand — you keep any gold found (typically 2–3 tiny flakes). Available April–November, no reservation needed.
