Shukunegi is a shipowners' village packed into a ravine on Sado's southern coast, and it is built the way it is because land ran out. Around a hundred houses stand wall to wall along lanes barely wide enough for two people, clad in vertical cedar boards weathered to grey, many of them built by ship's carpenters using timber salvaged from kitamaebune trading vessels. In the Edo period this was one of the wealthiest villages on the Japan Sea coast; the wealth went into the buildings rather than outward display, which is why the streets look severe.

The whole village is a nationally selected Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Its emblem is Sankakuya, a house squeezed into a triangular plot at a fork in the lane and shaped to fit, now open to look inside.

Shukunegi, Sado City. By car from Ogi Port and from Ryotsu Port. Walking the village is free; a ¥100 contribution towards upkeep is requested. Sankakuya interior ¥300 adults, ¥150 elementary and junior high school, open weekends and public holidays April to November and daily in August. Taraibune tub boats operate at nearby Ogi from about 8:20 AM.

**Park above and walk down.** The lanes are too narrow for cars and the village reads correctly on foot from the top. The descent takes two minutes. **Look at the cladding.** Boards run vertically rather than horizontally so that rain sheets off rather than soaking into the joints — a wind-and-salt solution rather than a style. Several houses reuse ship timber and you can see the old fastening holes. **Sankakuya is worth the ¥300 but keeps short hours.** Weekends and holidays April to November, daily in August. Outside those, the exterior is all you get. **Taraibune at Ogi, not here.** The tub boats are a fifteen-minute drive away at Ogi port and at Yajima-Kyojima. They were working craft for gathering abalone and seaweed off the rocks, and the shallow round hull exists because it turns in its own length among reefs. **The Sado Kokubunji and the Ogi folk museum are the local pairing.** The folk museum, ten minutes away, houses a full-scale reconstructed kitamaebune ship built in the village.
