Somaro (相馬樓) is a beautifully preserved Edo-period geisha house in the port city of Sakata, converted into a cultural museum and traditional entertainment venue. Built in 1813, the wooden two-story structure served as a high-class entertainment house for wealthy merchants involved in the kitamae-bune shipping trade that brought prosperity to Sakata. The building features elegant tatami rooms with painted sliding doors (fusuma), ornate transoms (ranma), and a traditional stage for performances. Today, Somaro offers daily maiko (apprentice geisha) dance performances accompanied by shamisen music, demonstrating classical dances from the Edo and Meiji periods. The ground floor houses a museum displaying historic geisha implements — elaborate kimono, hair ornaments (kanzashi), shamisen instruments, and photographs from Sakata's entertainment district heyday. The second floor serves kaiseki-style lunch with performance viewing (reservations required).

**Maiko performance context:** Unlike Kyoto where maiko culture is ubiquitous and commercialized, Sakata maintains a tiny traditional geisha community (約10 active geiko and maiko) serving primarily local business clients. The Somaro performances offer rare public access to authentic regional geisha arts. The dances are classical pieces (Sakata Maiko Odori, 酒田舞娘踊り) specific to Sakata tradition, distinct from Kyoto styles. The dancers are genuine working maiko, not performers hired for tourists — their technical skill is evident. Photography during performances is prohibited (protect performers' privacy), but photos in the museum areas are allowed. **Building architecture appreciation:** Take time to examine the architectural details: the keyaki (zelkova) wood beams, hand-painted fusuma featuring seasonal scenes, and the hidden staircases used by geisha to move between floors discreetly. The second-floor balcony overlooks the inner courtyard garden (枯山水, karesansui, dry rock garden). The building survived WWII bombing that destroyed much of Sakata and represents irreplaceable Edo-period craftsmanship. **Sakata port history context:** Somaro's wealth derived from Sakata's role as northern Japan's primary port during Edo period, handling rice shipments from Yamagata and Akita to Osaka. The kitamae-bune merchant ships made fortunes on these routes, creating Sakata's entertainment district where Somaro stood at the pinnacle. Walking the adjacent streets (Hiyoriyama area), you'll see preserved warehouse buildings (山居倉庫, Sankyo Souko, worth 30-min visit) and merchant mansions from the same era. **Lunch kaiseki value:** The ¥4,000 kaiseki lunch is seasonal Shonai cuisine (庄内料理) featuring local fish, rice, vegetables, and sake — significantly better value than comparable kaiseki in Kyoto (¥6,000-10,000). The meal is served in private tatami room with maiko performance visible through sliding screens. Book at least one week ahead for weekends.
