It's alien and beautiful if you like artifice; it's garish if you don't. The ¥3,700 ticket includes a buffet dinner (curry rice, miso soup, tea) which is functional fuel for staying warm, nothing more. You need to book 2+ weeks ahead for weekends—it sells out. The silence at night with just the wind and the lights is genuinely eerie. **Shooting juhyo:** Daytime needs blue sky or you get white ice against white sky with zero separation. Overcast is death. Night illumination wants a tripod (compact, not full-size; the boardwalks get crowded) and f/2.8 or faster glass. Try ISO 1600, 5-15 seconds depending on how bright they've got the floods. The colors change every 10 minutes so wait for the cycle you want. **Dress for -30°C wind chill:** This is not a joke. The summit hits -30°C with wind factored in on average winter days. You need: ski pants (insulated), down jacket, balaclava or hat that covers ears, ski gloves (thick; regular winter gloves fail), thermal base layers, and ski goggles or wrap sunglasses (snow blindness is real). Ropeway stations sell heat packs for ¥200—buy five. Your camera battery will die in 15 minutes; keep spares inside your jacket against your body.
