A small shrine to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning, built on top of a rock outcrop just offshore in Kinko Bay. A sandbar runs out to it, so at low tide you walk across the beach and climb the rock; at spring high tide the sandbar disappears and the shrine becomes an island.

The torii stands on the sand rather than on the rock, which means that twice a day it is either a gate at the start of a path or a gate standing in the sea. Local promotion has taken to calling it Kagoshima's Mont Saint-Michel, which is generous but points at the right thing. It is free, there is a ten-space car park across the road, and the view back across the bay takes in Sakurajima. Almost nobody comes.

4014 Tenjin-cho, Kanoya. Car recommended — from Kasanohara IC. Free to visit, with a free car park for around 10 cars and toilets across the road. Whether you can reach the shrine depends on the tide: the sandbar is walkable at low water and submerged at spring high tide. The climb to the main hall is a short scramble on rock.

**Check the tide, and decide which version you want.** Low water lets you cross and climb; spring high tide turns it into an island and is the better photograph from the shore. They are two different visits. **The climb is a scramble.** The main hall is on top of the rock and the way up is steep, with chains in places and no proper steps. Not for anyone unsteady, and not in wet weather. **Sakurajima is across the bay.** The view back from the rock takes in the volcano, which on a clear day makes the climb worth it independent of the shrine. **Ten parking spaces.** That tells you the expected volume. On a weekday you will be alone. **Combine with the Osumi coast road.** Kanoya to Nejime along the bay is one of the better drives in southern Kyushu and Ogawa Falls is at the end of it.
