Goshiki-numa

**Trail direction strategy:** The trail can be walked either direction, but east-to-west (starting at Goshiki-numa Entrance) is optimal: you encounter the most dramatic ponds (Bishamon-numa, Aka-numa) first while energy is high, the trail is slightly downhill (easier), and bus connections back to Inawashiro are more frequent from the western terminus. Start early (8:00–9:00) to avoid afternoon tour groups. **Color optimization:** Pond colors shift dramatically with weather and time of day. Overcast conditions create flat, muted tones — vivid colors require sunny weather when direct light penetrates the water and illuminates suspended minerals. Midday (11:00–14:00) sun creates peak color saturation. Autumn (October) offers the bonus of reflected foliage colors mixing with water tones. Winter visits (December–February) show ponds partially frozen but colors remain visible through ice — surreal but requires crampons for icy boardwalks. **Photography targets:** Bishamon-numa at the trail's start is the most photographed — rent a rowboat (¥700/30 minutes) for on-water shots looking back at Mt. Bandai reflection. Aka-numa (1.2km into trail) is easiest to photograph from the southern boardwalk section where you can capture both red-tinted water and green forest contrast. Midori-numa (2.8km) is smallest but most intensely colored — arrive at 12:00–13:00 when overhead sun penetrates deepest. Use polarizing filter to reduce surface glare and enhance subsurface color.
