Le château Tsuruga-jo (Wakamatsu-jo) est le symbole d'Aizu-Wakamatsu et le seul château du Japon à tuiles rouges. Il fut le théâtre de la résistance finale du clan Aizu pendant la guerre de Boshin (1868), quand les jeunes guerriers Byakkotai (Corps du Tigre blanc) se donnèrent la mort en croyant à tort que le château était tombé. Cette histoire, parmi les plus tragiques du Japon, est retracée dans le musée intérieur.

Le château fut reconstruit en 1965 et ses tuiles rouges lui confèrent un aspect unique parmi les châteaux japonais. Les jardins de cerisiers au printemps et l'illumination nocturne sont particulièrement beaux. La ville d'Aizu-Wakamatsu conserve aussi une atmosphère de cité samouraï avec des résidences historiques et un saké local de renom.

Train: JR Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Koriyama, then JR Ban-etsu West Line to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station (55 min, ¥1,320). Then Haikara-san retro bus to castle (20 min, ¥240). Bus: City loop bus connects major Aizu-Wakamatsu sights — Tsuruga Castle, Oyakuen Garden, and Iimoriyama (Byakkotai) (¥240/ride, day pass ¥900). Taxi: Aizu-Wakamatsu Station to castle approx ¥1,200 (5 min).

Morning (9:00–11:00 AM) for soft light on the red tiles before tour groups fill the grounds. Cherry blossom night illumination: 6:30–7:30 PM for golden hour into illumination transition.

Cherry blossom season (mid-April) draws large crowds, particularly evenings during illumination. Weekday mornings are consistently uncrowded. The interior museum is small — mornings are best to avoid bottlenecks on the stairways.

**Cherry blossom timing:** The 1,000+ cherry trees around Tsuruga Castle peak in mid-April, give or take a week depending on spring temperatures. Night illumination runs 18:00-21:00 during bloom season, and the red-tiled castle glowing under lights with pink blossoms overhead is Fukushima's most photographed spring scene. Crowds are thick from 18:00-19:00 when tour groups arrive; come after 19:00 for breathing room. The lighting creates an odd pink-on-red color combination that shouldn't work but does. **Byakkotai hillside:** After the castle, take a bus north to Iimoriyama, the hill where 20 teenage Byakkotai samurai committed seppuku in 1868. They saw smoke rising over Aizu-Wakamatsu, assumed the castle had fallen, and chose death over dishonor. The castle hadn't fallen — it held for another three weeks. The hillside has their graves, a memorial hall, and Japan's oldest inclined escalator (¥250) carrying you up the steep slope. The story adds tragic context to the castle's military history. **Tea ceremony:** Chashitsu Rinkaku is a 400-year-old tea house in the castle grounds, designed by the son of Sen no Rikyu (the master who codified tea ceremony). You can do a simplified tea experience (¥810) that includes matcha and a seasonal sweet, served in a tatami room overlooking a small garden. Book the morning session (9:00-11:00) for quieter contemplation. The ceremony takes 20 minutes and balances the castle's martial history with refined culture — the two sides of samurai life.
