The Tadami Line (只見線) is consistently ranked as Japan's most scenic railway, a 135km route threading through remote mountain gorges, emerald rivers, and traditional farming villages between Aizu-Wakamatsu and Niigata Prefecture. The most photographed section spans the Tadami River between Aizu-Kawaguchi and Tadami stations, where the train crosses three iron bridges suspended above turquoise waters — particularly the iconic Second Tadami River Bridge viewed from Michinoku Observatory (道の駅尾瀬街道みしま宿). The landscape transforms dramatically by season: cherry blossoms (May), vibrant green mountains (July–August), fiery autumn colors (October–November), and snow-blanketed valleys (December–February).

The line was partially closed for 7 years after 2011 floods destroyed bridges, but full service resumed in 2022 with restored vintage diesel trains running 5–6 round trips daily. The journey takes 4.5 hours end-to-end, passing through 22 tunnels and crossing 31 bridges. Most visitors ride the 1-hour scenic section between Aizu-Kawaguchi and Tadami, particularly the 30-minute stretch from Aizu-Miyashita to Tadami where the train hugs riverside cliffs and offers panoramic valley views.
