The Higashimatsuura Peninsula, north of Karatsu, is a 40km circuit of dramatic coastal scenery accessible by bicycle — rocky headlands, hidden fishing coves, rice paddy hamlets, and the occasional offshore island visible across the Genkai Sea. The route passes Yobuko (squid), Hikoshima Island Bridge (Japan's first stone arch bridge, 1702), and multiple shrines perched on sea-facing cliffs. The peninsula has almost no tourist infrastructure beyond the morning market at Yobuko — which makes cycling it feel genuinely exploratory.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Best section:** The western cliff road between Nishiyoka and Yobuko passes through a sequence of sea-facing farmhouses where net-drying and squid-drying racks extend over the cliff edges. This 8km section has no bicycle lane but minimal traffic. **Hikoshima stone bridge:** The 1702 stone arch bridge is 40m upstream from the main coastal road — turn at the blue arrow sign. The bridge is still used by farm vehicles; the engineering (cut from a single granite formation) is visible from below on the streambed.
