The Niji-no-Matsubara pine grove fronts a 5km bicycle lane alongside the beach, rated by Cycling magazine as one of Japan's top 10 coastal cycling experiences. The pine trees filter the sea breeze and create a shifting light pattern on the road surface as the rider moves beneath the canopy — the effect, particularly in morning light, is a sequence of illuminated frames through the trunks. The path ends at the Matsuura River mouth where Karatsu Castle is visible on the opposite bank.

Bicycle rental from Karatsu Station (¥500–800/day, first-come). The cycling lane runs from the station beach path to Niji-no-Matsubara Koen (5km, no elevation change). Return via the pine grove interior trail for variety.

**Early morning exclusive:** The beach path at 6:00–7:30 is used only by fishermen and exercise runners — the pine canopy with morning mist and the castle silhouette in the distance is the defining image of Karatsu, and it only exists at this specific hour. **Beach camping:** From July to August, a designated camping area opens at the eastern end of the beach (¥500/night, fire rings provided). The pine grove deadens sound from town and the beach faces north — minimal light pollution for summer star viewing.
