Iwami kagura is the loud one. Where much shrine dance in Japan is slow and hieratic, the western Shimane version is fast, percussive and theatrical — eight-beat drumming, elaborate embroidered costumes weighing upwards of twenty kilograms, and set pieces in which a performer inside a long cloth serpent fights a sword-wielding deity across the floor. The signature piece, Orochi, stages the Yamata-no-Orochi myth with multiple serpents at once, and it is genuinely startling to watch from a few metres away.

What makes Hamada unusual is that you do not have to hit a festival date. Sannomiya Shrine, properly Taisai Amanoiwatohiko Shrine, runs performances almost every Saturday night through the year, plus additional Friday dates in autumn. It is a real shrine hall rather than a theatre, the audience is largely local, no booking is required, and it costs less than a cinema ticket in Tokyo.

**Arrive at seven, not eight.** Doors open an hour before the performance and the good positions — close, side-on to the floor where the serpent work happens — go first. The hall is not large. **Hope for Orochi.** The programme varies. Orochi is the piece with the multiple cloth serpents and is the one everyone wants; Ebisu, which involves throwing sweets into the audience, is the other crowd favourite. Neither is guaranteed on a given night. **No booking, but check it is on.** Performances run most Saturdays but there are dark nights through the year. The Hamada Tourism Association can confirm the date, and the schedule is published in advance. **Sitting is on the floor.** This is a shrine hall, not a theatre. Expect tatami or mats and dress so you can sit low for an hour. **Plan the night, not the evening.** Hamada is on the Sanin Line and the last trains are early. If you are coming from Matsue or Izumo, either stay in Hamada or drive — the performance ends at nine and the connections after that are thin.
