Sandankyo Gorge (三段峡) is a 16-kilometer river gorge carved through the Chugoku Mountains in northwestern Hiroshima, renowned for its emerald-green waters, sheer rock walls, dense forests, and dramatic natural scenery. Designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in 1953, Sandankyo features five distinct scenic sections (the 'Five Views') connected by riverside trails and wooden boardwalks, with waterfalls, clear pools, and autumn foliage creating a wilderness experience rare in accessible Japanese landscapes.

The gorge's hiking trails range from easy riverside walks (1–2 hours for highlights) to full-day treks through the entire gorge. Key spots include Kurobuchi (黒淵, 'Black Pool') with jet-black still waters reflecting surrounding cliffs, Sarutobi (猿飛, 'Monkey Leap') where the river narrows to a dramatic chasm, and Sandanfall (三段滝), a three-tiered waterfall. Small wooden ferries (渡し舟, ¥500–700) transport visitors across deeper pools, adding adventure to the hike. The water's emerald color, caused by mineral content and depth, is most vivid in spring and summer; autumn (mid-October to early November) transforms the gorge with red-gold foliage contrasting against the green river. Sandankyo's relative remoteness (1.5 hours from Hiroshima City) keeps crowds low, offering a tranquil nature escape for hikers and photographers.

**Trail route recommendations:** For casual hikers or those on limited time, the 'Kurobuchi to Sarutobi' section (2.5km, 90 minutes round-trip) provides the most dramatic scenery with minimal effort. This route includes boat ferry crossings and boardwalk sections over the river, passing the iconic Kurobuchi pool and narrow Sarutobi gorge. For serious hikers, the full gorge trek from Sandankyo entrance to Oku-Sandankyo (16km one-way, 5–7 hours) offers wilderness immersion but requires stamina and proper gear (boots, water, snacks). Most visitors choose the middle option: hiking to Sandanfall waterfall (5km round-trip, 3 hours), which balances effort and scenic reward. **Boat ferry experience:** Small wooden ferries (capacity 4–6 passengers) operated by local boatmen cross deep pools at Kurobuchi and other points. Ferries operate April–November (weather permitting), roughly 9:00–16:00. The crossing itself is part of the experience — gliding across mirror-still emerald water with sheer rock walls rising on both sides. Boatmen provide (Japanese) commentary on the gorge's history and geology. Ferry use is optional — some trails bypass the pools via alternate paths — but highly recommended for the full Sandankyo experience. **Seasonal timing:** Autumn (mid-October to early November) is peak season when maple, oak, and beech foliage ignites the gorge in red, orange, and yellow, creating stunning contrast with the green river. Weekends during this period see moderate crowds; weekdays are quieter. Spring (late April–May) offers fresh green foliage and wildflowers with fewer visitors. Summer (June–August) is lush and humid but can be crowded during Japanese summer holidays (mid-August). Winter (December–March) sees trail closures due to ice and reduced ferry service; only experienced hikers should attempt winter visits.
