**Getting the sunrise shot:** Between March 20-25 and September 15-20, the sun rises directly through the torii — those are the only times the alignment works. Check sunrise times on your phone and arrive 30 minutes early; the concrete platform fills with tripods by dawn. The gate faces east-northeast, which means summer and winter sunrises miss the frame entirely. On alignment days, expect 20-30 other photographers jockeying for position. **Tide timing:** At low tide you can walk onto the rock platform itself — the stones are slippery green with algae but stable. This gets you close enough to shoot upward at the gate with waves in the background. At high tide the platform becomes an island and you're stuck on the concrete terrace 50 meters back, shooting telephoto. Tide tables are on the Japan Meteorological Agency site; low tide at sunrise is the jackpot. **Other angles:** Most people shoot from the main terrace, but at low tide you can scramble down to the rock jetty 100 meters south of the gate. From there you get the torii with shrine buildings and pine trees visible on the cliff behind it — a three-layer composition nobody else bothers with. Requires decent balance and waterproof boots. **Winter wave drama:** December through February brings 3-meter northwest swells that slam the gate's base and send spray 10 meters high. The sunrise light is weak and golden that time of year, and weather is a coin flip — cloudy mornings outnumber clear ones. April and May are calmer, with reliable sun and gentler seas. Pick based on whether you want safety or spectacle. **Morning market combo:** Oarai Fish Market is 2 kilometers north, a 25-minute walk along the coast road. The auction starts at 6:00am, so if you're already up for sunrise you might as well continue north and grab a kaisendon breakfast (¥1,500) made from fish caught that night. The aquarium is another 10-minute walk past the market — open at 9:00, good for touching starfish and sea anemones in the tide pool tanks.
