Oarai Port lands some of the finest Pacific seafood in the Kanto region — flatfish (hirame), Pacific saury (sanma), monkfish (anko), and shirasu (whitebait) caught from the cold Oyashio Current that sweeps down from Hokkaido. The Oarai Kaihin Fish Market opens daily at 8:00am when fishing boats return from overnight trawls. The scene is pure function — fishmongers in rubber boots shouting prices, crushed ice glittering under fluorescent lights, whole fish laid out by species.

The market's upstairs dining floor houses a dozen small restaurants that serve kaisendon — seafood rice bowls piled with the morning's catch. Each restaurant sources directly from vendors downstairs; the sashimi was swimming 6 hours earlier. Menus change daily based on what the boats brought in. Ordering is straightforward: choose a bowl size (small/medium/large, ¥1,300–2,500) and trust the chef to assemble the freshest selection. The fish quality is comparable to Tokyo's Tsukiji at half the price and one-tenth the tourist density.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Which restaurant to choose:** The second floor has 12 near-identical stalls. Locals favor Hamayaki Shokudo (浜焼食堂) at the far left — they serve the largest portions and grill shellfish to order. Kaisendon Yamamoto specializes in shirasu (whitebait) bowls in spring and monkfish liver (ankimo) in winter. **Seasonal specialties:** Winter (November–March) is monkfish season — ask for 'anko nabe' (monkfish hot pot) if available, or 'anko-no-karaage' (fried monkfish), which tastes like delicate fried chicken. Spring (March–May) brings shirasu (whitebait) — get it raw (nama-shirasu) if the boats came in that morning; otherwise it's lightly boiled. Summer hirame (flatfish) is lean and sweet. Autumn brings sanma (Pacific saury), grilled with salt. **The build-your-own option:** Some restaurants offer 'jibun-de-don' — buy sashimi portions from the market downstairs, bring them upstairs, and the restaurant provides rice and miso soup for ¥300. This lets you select exactly which fish you want and control portion sizes. **Grilled shellfish BBQ:** Outdoor charcoal grills behind the market let you grill fresh scallops, turban shells, and oysters bought from vendors (equipment use ¥300). Buy shellfish, grab a grill spot, and cook over bincho charcoal — peak coastal Japan experience. **Combine with:** After breakfast, walk 1km south to Oarai Sun Beach (fine sand, gentle waves, popular for swimming June–September). Then visit Aqua World Oarai Aquarium (15-min walk north), which has Japan's largest shark collection and excellent jellyfish exhibits.
