Le château de Kumamoto, considéré comme l'un des trois grands châteaux du Japon, a subi des dégâts dévastateurs lors des séismes d'avril 2016. Le donjon principal a été restauré et rouvert, et la reconstruction du reste du complexe — murs de pierre, portes, bâtiments annexes — se poursuit comme un projet de plusieurs décennies que l'on peut observer en direct.

Les murailles de pierre, conçues avec une courbure appelée musha-gaeshi (de plus en plus abrupte vers le sommet, empêchant les assaillants d'escalader), sont un chef-d'œuvre d'ingénierie militaire. Le donjon offre une vue panoramique sur la ville et sur le mont Aso au loin.

Its own posted hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Tramway de Kumamoto jusqu'à Kumamotojo-mae (10 min depuis la gare JR Kumamoto). Horaires : 09h00–17h00. Entrée : ¥800 adultes.

Guide d'initié

Restoration observation deck: The view into the reconstruction process — seeing traditional techniques like stone stacking without mortar — is more educational than the finished product. Entry included in castle ticket.

Evening illumination: The castle is illuminated nightly until 23:00. The partially-restored state creates an unusual aesthetic — modern scaffolding against 400-year-old walls, lit dramatically. Best viewed from Ninomaru Park (free access after hours).

Honmaru Palace interior: The palace reconstruction (completed 2008, survived earthquake) contains rooms with recreated Kano school paintings and gold leaf. The 'Sho-kun-no-ma' (audience chamber) represents peak Edo-period craftsmanship.
