Kyoto Handicraft Center (京都ハンディクラフトセンター) is a seven-floor department store specializing in traditional Kyoto crafts: ceramics (Kiyomizu-yaki), textiles (Nishijin-ori, yuzen-dyeing), lacquerware, folding fans, tea utensils, and kimono. Unlike tourist traps, the center works directly with local artisans and prices are reasonable for authentic handcrafted goods.

Daily cultural demonstrations (10:00–18:00, free) showcase traditional crafts: kimono dressing, yuzen fabric dyeing, kyo-yaki pottery painting, and tea ceremony. The tax-free shopping benefits international visitors, and international shipping is available for large purchases.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Authentic souvenir strategy:** The center's merchandise is genuine Kyoto crafts (not mass-produced imports like Kiyomizu-zaka souvenir shops). Prices reflect this — ceramic tea cups start at ¥3,000 vs ¥500 for tourist-grade versions, but the quality and artisan connection justify the cost. For authentic keepsakes, budget ¥5,000–20,000 for meaningful pieces (handmade ceramics, textiles, lacquerware). **Cultural demonstrations:** Daily schedule rotates: kimono dressing (11:00, 14:00), yuzen dyeing demo (10:30, 15:30), pottery painting (13:00, 16:00). Demonstrations are free, 20–30 minutes, English explanations available. Watching yuzen artisan hand-paint silk with delicate brushwork explains why yuzen kimono cost ¥100,000–1,000,000+. Photography permitted. **Best purchases:** Folding fans (¥3,000–8,000) are lightweight, functional souvenirs. Ceramics (¥3,000–20,000) from Kiyomizu-yaki tradition make excellent gifts for tea/coffee lovers. Small furoshiki (wrapping cloth, ¥1,500–4,000) with traditional patterns are practical and packable. The 7F sale floor offers 30–50% discounts on previous season items — still authentic quality at more affordable prices.
