Real geisha wear subtle, expensive kimono (¥1–5 million) with family crests, white tabi socks, and distinctive hairstyles. Tourist geisha costumes are obvious: cheaper fabric, incorrect makeup, group photos. **Photography etiquette:** Photographing geisha from a distance is acceptable; blocking their path or requesting selfies is considered harassment. Geisha are working professionals en route to jobs — treat them as you would any working person in formal attire. Kyoto has implemented fines for tourists harassing geisha in private alleys. **Accessible geisha experiences:** Gion Corner offers 50-minute cultural shows (tea ceremony, flower arrangement, geisha dance) for ¥3,150 — touristy but legitimate introduction. Alternatively, attend Miyako Odori (都をどり, April) or Kyo Odori (October) — public geisha dance performances with English programs (¥4,500–6,000). These showcase authentic artistry without ochaya's exclusivity.
